Councilor seeks school board OK to recruit high-school representative to council

Councilor Haugen told the council Aug. 4 he plans to approach the local school board to request permission to recruit a high-school student (junior or senior) to serve as a nonvoting city council representative and as a first step toward a future youth council.
Haugen said the student position would be an open recruitment for juniors and seniors with a one-year term, possibly renewable if the representative were a junior who wished to serve a second year. The city’s cost would be minimal — mainly a nameplate — and Haugen said he would coordinate with the school district and high-school principal on selection and forms. Councilors gave their consent for him to approach the school board.
Councilor Santiago noted the League of Oregon Cities (LOC) municipal conference offers student sessions in October and suggested that if a student is selected early, the city consider registering them for that event. Councilors discussed whether the selection should be handled through the school’s student-government process or an open application to ensure formality.
No formal policy change was adopted; Councilor Haugen will present the concept to the school board at its next meeting and report back.
