County committee presents Chapman Landing/Trail kiosk plan; city asks for continued coordination and funding options

County committee members presented a multi‑topic signage and kiosk plan for Chapman Landing and the adjacent trail on Aug. 18, showing proposed sign content for railroad history, airport and wildlife/natural history, the 1948 flood, logging and agricultural history and other local stories. Presenters said the county has several kiosk units on hand and estimated costs for production: smaller kiosks roughly $1,500 each (labor and materials) and larger kiosks about $3,000 each.
The presentation included newly discovered historical slides and maps the presenters said had not been widely seen, and committee members said they are coordinating with the local historical society to refine stories, images and locations. Committee members requested city acknowledgment that the project is ongoing and asked for help identifying locations, additional funding and possible partners for development and fabrication.
Council members and staff expressed support for the project and noted the potential for grant funding assistance. Staff said the kiosks could be phased (build a few now and add more later) and reminded the committee that final design, accessibility features and technology (for example QR codes or audio) would need further analysis. The council requested continued coordination among city staff, the county committee and the historical society and encouraged pursuing grants and partnerships to cover costs.
