Marshfield Pioneer Cemetery preservation: grants complete, council acceptance pending; crowdfunding and alumni outreach ongoing

City of Coos Bay staff told the Parks Commission that work under the historic-preservation grant for Marshfield Pioneer Cemetery (phase 3) is complete and the final report was submitted ahead of the July 15 deadline, and that a subsequent Preserving Oregon grant agreement (phase 5) has been fully executed and awaits formal acceptance by the city council.
Christina Techshera, City of Coos Bay, reported: "For the Pioneer or Marshville Pioneer Cemetery, the historic preservation grant phase 3. All work has been completed and final report submitted in advance of the July 15 deadline. Preserving Oregon grant phase 6 or 5. The grant agreement has been fully executed. Staff is confirming a formal city council accepts acceptance is still required." Techshera also said the city applied for the Oregon Historic Cemetery grant (phase 5) but "was not awarded funding through the 2025 grant cycle."
Techshera described continuing community outreach through summer 2025, focusing on engaging Marshfield High School alumni during class reunions as potential donors to meet ongoing preservation needs and grant match requirements. She referenced a crowdfunding campaign by name in the staff report.
Commissioner Cricket (online) asked whether the executed grant agreement must be accepted by the city council; Techshera and other staff confirmed council acceptance is required and will be sought.
No formal action was taken by the Parks Commission on the cemetery update; staff described completed grant reporting and ongoing fundraising and outreach. The item will proceed to council for formal acceptance of the executed grant agreement and staff will continue outreach and fundraising activities.
