Butler County commissioners approved a $55,000 contract to replace the lighting system on the Coal Creek 800‑megahertz radio tower.
Jeremy Seglum, the county’s Emergency Communications Director, told the board the tower — originally erected in 2010 by Hayden Towers — has used incandescent lighting and that several shelter components and strobes have failed. Seglum recommended replacing the existing lights with a day/night LED system provided by Hayden Tower Service, which the county uses for tower maintenance. "My recommendation is to authorize Hayden Tower to replace the lighting system with day night lights, at a cost of $55,000," Seglum said.
Seglum told commissioners the tower is about 400 feet tall, that repainting (red/white FAA paint) could cost $40 to $80 per foot, and that the quoted LED system would include FAA compliance filings and remote monitoring. He said LED lifespans are estimated at 15 to 20 years and that Hayden was chosen because it is a full‑service tower contractor able to do antenna or other work while crews are aloft. Commissioners moved to approve the purchase; Commissioner Herrissett made the motion, Commissioner Masterson seconded, and the vote was 5‑0. Seglum estimated installation would take two to three weeks to schedule and wait for lights to arrive.
The board did not discuss alternate funding sources; Seglum characterized the expense as expected maintenance rather than an unplanned emergency.
