On July 29 the Salem School Board adopted revisions to the Salem/Woodbury Athletic Hall of Fame bylaws clarifying how teams and team members may be nominated and screened for induction. The motion, offered by Vice Chair Bernard Campbell and seconded by Aaron Khalil, passed 5-0.
Administration said the proposed changes responded to a prior board concern: if a championship team included a former non-graduate or individual the committee considered ineligible, the entire team should not automatically be disqualified. The revised language gives the screening committee authority to identify which members of a nominated team are eligible for induction. “The concern was brought forth that if perhaps there's someone ... that should not be considered for nomination,” Superintendent Laura Palmer said, explaining the committee retains authority to exclude individual members while still recognizing a team.
Board members also unanimously approved a technical edit to Section 3: they changed a word in the sentence describing standards of conduct from “or” to “and” so that nominees satisfy both in-school and post-graduation standards as written. The board recorded the action as adopting the draft dated 07/29/25 with that single-change amendment.
The revised bylaws were adopted on a 5-0 vote; the screening committee will apply the updated criteria in its nomination and selection process.
