Residents and community advocates raised maintenance and tenant-rights concerns about Golden Key Apartments during the Aug. 12 public-comment period, asking the council and housing authorities to intervene.
Zach Service, a Ward 3 resident who said he had been speaking with tenants for months, described a complex with limited maintenance staff and deferred repairs affecting seniors. “They’re not getting the treatment they deserve, and that’s a lot of seniors,” Service said, asking the council to support action and enforcement.
Councilman Stokes and other members heard a specific case from a family member who said a long-term tenant had her rent payments refused and then placed in escrow after a court ruling. The commenter said the tenant is 69 and has physical and mental health issues, has lived at the property about 25 years and wants stability rather than eviction.
Council members asked the city attorney and housing officials to review the situation and to consult with the housing authority about the property’s status and protections for long-term tenants. Councilman Stokes requested legal outreach to determine what role the city can play beyond appointing housing-authority board members and to explore a negotiated solution to prevent displacement of vulnerable residents.
No formal enforcement action was taken during the meeting; council members asked staff to follow up with the housing authority and legal counsel and to report back to the council on any remedies or referrals available to residents.
