Council approves change order for Hughes Avenue paving; funds from unobligated water and sewer balance

The Gulfport City Council approved Change Order No. 2 to Suncoast Infrastructure to include sewer pipe lining as part of the paving of Hughes Avenue, a project that will cover the corridor from Coffee Creek Boulevard north past 30 Fourth Street.
City engineering staff said the sewer lining is intended to address recurring cave-ins and to protect the integrity of newly paved surfaces. “This is just an effort to make sure that the infrastructure underneath the newly paved road is in good shape,” project manager Jeremy said when presenting the change order.
Councilmember Hines referenced the city’s 2013 sewer master plan and asked staff to consider an updated master plan; staff confirmed the work is funded from unobligated water-and-sewer funds and that a budget amendment to allocate the money was on the agenda later that night.
The council voted to approve the change order and the motion carried unanimously. Engineering confirmed Chris Raymond is the project engineer associated with the work and staff noted related work on Thornton as well.
Council members signaled support for prioritizing water and sewer infrastructure investments and for updating long-range planning documents so future projects align with a current master plan.
