Senate committee recommends John Deeds for Utah State Tax Commission seat

The committee voted 6-0 to recommend his confirmation to the full Senate.
Deeds, who said he holds a law degree and an LL.M. in taxation from Georgetown University and has practiced in state and local tax matters, gave an opening statement that included biographical detail and a pledge to serve. "I'm excited for the opportunity that's presented for me with this appointment," he said, and added that he and his wife had prayed and reflected before accepting the nomination.

Committee supporters offered public testimony in favor of Deeds before the committee vote. John Valentine, commissioner and chairman of the Utah State Tax Commission, said the commission "fully endorse[s] on behalf of myself and my fellow commissioners, the appointment of Johnny Deeds" and described him as "eminently qualified." Billy Hesterman of the Utah Taxpayers Association said Deeds "has been someone that's been an advisor to us" and praised his ability to address complicated, centrally assessed tax issues. Pamela Hunsaker, an attorney at Crapo Deeds who has worked with Deeds for 15 years, said, "I know him to be a man of intelligence and integrity."
During committee discussion, Senator Wilson moved that the committee "fairly recommend John or Johnny Deeds . . . to the full body of the senate with a high recommendation as a commissioner of the state tax commission." The motion passed 6-0. The committee chair said the nomination will be forwarded to the full Senate and that confirmations are expected to be held on Wednesday, "if I remember right." No opposition to the nomination was recorded in the transcript.
The committee’s action is a recommendation only; the full Utah Senate must vote to confirm Deeds to the commission. If confirmed, Deeds’ term was announced in the hearing as expiring June 30, 2029.
