Jody Hart, nominated by the governor to serve on the Utah Board of Higher Education, won a unanimous favorable recommendation from the Senate Education Confirmation Committee after describing eight years on the Southern Utah University board of trustees, including three years as chair.
Hart told the committee her service as a student lobbyist and as a trustee has shaped a student-centered approach; she said the system must balance innovation and transformation with access and affordability amid a demographic dip. “Providing a quality and meaningful education requires focusing on the needs of the students,” she said.
Committee members pressed Hart on how she would protect institutional missions and the role of educators on governing boards. Hart said the trustee role has shifted toward local decision-making and that trustees should have increased authority while the system supports research and options. Senator McKell moved that the committee forward Hart’s nomination with a favorable recommendation; the motion passed unanimously. Hart will now await confirmation by the full Senate.
