John Klinghammer of Hazelbrook Recovery addressed the Centennial council during the Aug. 5 public comment period to describe the provider’s services, street outreach plans and a proposed diversion crisis center intended to offer an alternative to arrest for people experiencing substance use or behavioral health crises.
Klinghammer identified Hazelbrook’s multiple residences serving people in recovery and said the organization is developing a diversion center that would provide an alternative to jail for people whose issues are primarily behavioral‑health or substance‑use related. He described program elements including a transitional safety zone (a free program for people still using substances), meals, clothing, transportation help and assistance obtaining identification documents. “We’re developing the street outreach team where the impact is multifaceted,” Klinghammer said, adding the group plans outreach, cleanups and on‑the‑ground engagement to build trust with people who are unhoused.
A council member asked whether Hazelbrook had been connected to Bridge House and Vanessa Gates; the speaker said connection would be welcome. Council members and staff noted regional coordination on opioid response and outreach and advised the presenter that staff could help make introductions to Bridge House and other partners and to the regional opioid council.
No council action was taken; public comments were referred to staff for follow‑up and possible coordination with regional outreach efforts.
