Julia, representing Historic Greeley Inc., told the Historic Preservation Commission on July 21 about two items: the rehab of the Almond Building by the Creative Arts District and the organization’s Weekend Preservation Project. She called the Almond Building rehab “a win” both for reuse and the environment and thanked the commission for putting the building on the historic register.
On the Weekend Preservation Project, Julia said the program assists owners of historic, owner-occupied homes with exterior, streetscape-facing preservation or maintenance tasks that can be completed by a crew in a weekend. “Applications are due September 1,” she said, and she encouraged residents to apply and to contact Historic Greeley by phone or through the application posted on the organization’s website.
Julia said the project typically focuses on exterior and front-facing streetscape work and sometimes includes landscaping; in prior cycles the program has emphasized preservation tasks that are feasible to complete in a weekend rather than long-term renovations. She said Historic Greeley will evaluate applications and dispatch an assessor to advise whether a proposed task could be done in a weekend or would take longer than the program can support.
Commissioners and the chair discussed outreach and recommended distributing flyers to realtors and neighborhood contacts; Julia said she had provided flyers and asked commissioners to pass them on. Historic Greeley did not request or record any formal city action during the presentation.
Julia also noted upcoming public programs run by Historic Greeley and the commission: a walking tour at 6 p.m. the night of July 21 starting at City Hall, a History Hour presentation on Thursday at noon featuring young Chautauquans at the History Museum, and a walking tour on Monday, August 11 at 5:30 p.m. starting at Campus Commons on the UNC campus. The commission’s next regular meeting on August 4 has no agenda items and the chair said she will be absent; a special meeting may be scheduled if needed.
