Council adopts ordinance changing parking rules near schools and other areas

The City Council adopted the third and final reading of Ordinance No. 1069, which amends Chapter 69 (Parking Regulations) of the city code by adding provisions for parking zones, all-night parking and truck and boat parking.

Why it matters: The ordinance changes will affect street-level parking rules in designated areas, including blocks adjacent to the high school and practice fields where parked vehicles have previously narrowed the roadway and hampered emergency vehicle access.

During discussion a councilmember asked why Fourteenth Street between H and J Avenue appears on the list adjacent to a practice football field. A city official explained the listing is to the west of the practice field and noted similar issues on the south side of the high school where parking on the public roadway can make the street impassable for larger vehicles. The official described street widths typically between 24 and 27 feet and said that when vehicles park close to the curve on both sides it limits maneuvering clearance for fire trucks and ambulances.

The ordinance passed on its final reading with council comment thanking multiple departments for answering neighborhood questions and for communication with property owners. "I just wanted to thank a couple of the departments, for answering my questions on this… appreciated those conversations," a councilmember said.
