Pembroke Park police officials told the commission Wednesday that a recent grant and equipment purchases are intended to modernize investigations and field operations. "We just recently received a check from them for $287,347.80," Detective/Administrator Dan DeCourcy said, referring to an FDLE grant that funded a records-management system the department selected as Smart Comp.
DeCourcy said the records management system, implemented with help from finance and IT, will produce daily hot-spot data and a searchable case history that officers and dispatchers can access. The department is also upgrading to Axon body-worn cameras and newer Tasers, DeCourcy said, and has one remaining sworn vacancy with a new officer starting Aug. 11.
On victim services, the department has applied for a special-victims grant to create a dedicated detective position for domestic-violence and sexual-assault cases. The grant would pay the detective's salary for three years, DeCourcy said, and the department expected to learn the outcome within about two weeks.
Why it matters: commissioners said public-safety technology and staffing affect response, investigations and community trust. Police officials also described expanded training, regional cooperation on forensics and plans to pursue federal task-force, money-laundering and crime-prevention positions.
No formal action was taken at the workshop; the police chief and staff said they would return with any required contract or grant documents for commission approval.
