Cobb officials celebrate Silver Comet extension linking trail to Atlanta BeltLine
Summary
Cobb County leaders marked completion of the Silver Comet Trail extension at the Floyd Road Trailhead, saying the project — funded through the 2016 SPLOST program and advanced by a 2023 agenda item — connects the trail to Atlanta's BeltLine with a brief detour around an unfinished Atlanta segment.

Cobb County officials celebrated completion of the Silver Comet Trail extension that links the trail with Atlanta's BeltLine during a brief ceremony at the Floyd Road Trailhead. Chairwoman Lisa Cupid joined a group of bicyclists on the commemorative ride and spoke at the event.
The extension is part of the county's 2016 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) program and was advanced by an agenda item that county commissioners approved in 2023. "I've been advocating for the extension of the Silver Comet for 20 years," Chairwoman Lisa Cupid said. "I am 70 years old. It's been a long time."
Why it matters: County officials described the connection as improving regional recreation and transportation options by creating a continuous route between Cobb County and Atlanta. Remarks at the trailhead noted that a small portion of the route inside Atlanta is not yet finished but that riders were able to use a short detour to continue between the two trails.
At the Floyd Road Trailhead, officials including commissioners Allen and Sheffield joined the ride and the brief public remarks. County presentations at the event credited taxpayer support through the 2016 SPLOST funding cycle and the 2023 commission action that moved the project forward; speakers said the on-the-ground construction and final link-up took roughly two years after the 2023 action.
No formal motions or votes occurred as part of the trailhead ceremony; remarks were celebratory and informational. Event speakers highlighted the project as a transportation and health-and-wellness enhancement for residents and regional trail users.
Background and next steps: County remarks did not provide a construction completion certificate or specific reopening dates for other trailheads beyond Floyd Road. Officials said the installed connection allows bicyclists to travel between the Silver Comet Trail and the Atlanta BeltLine, subject to the short detour in Atlanta until that segment is completed.
