Council examines wind damage at Veterans Memorial and storm debris cleanup costs

Council received an update on wind damage to the Veterans Memorial and on the townwide storm cleanup after recent high winds.
City staff reported the memorial sustained damage; the memorial is insured for $29,000 while the policy has a $25,000 deductible. Staff said they will obtain repair estimates and that earlier maintenance agreements placed the memorial’s upkeep responsibility with the city. "I don't think this repair is going to be over that," a staff member said, and staff will get a quote for repairs to present to the council.
Council and staff also discussed storm cleanup operations: crews pushed fallen trees and limbs to temporary staging, used side-dump trucks to haul material and have nearly filled the pilot rubble site. Public-works staff asked residents not to bring additional material to the curb while cleanup continues and said some material will be crushed for use as landfill cover. Councilmembers praised crews and volunteers for rapid response and coordination with outside helpers.
A councilmember asked whether state or federal disaster assistance might be available; staff said they are awaiting a declaration at the county level that could make certain state or federal funds eligible for cleanup reimbursements.
Why it matters: The memorial damage could generate a city out-of-pocket expense up to the deductible and storm cleanup has already produced sizable operational costs. A disaster declaration could offset some cleanup expenditures if approved.
