Superintendent reports building fire, expedited rebuild permits and enrollment dip

During the Aug. 11 board meeting, the superintendent reported on a summer building fire and district operations as the 2025–26 school year began.
The superintendent said a district building burned over the summer and district staff were called in during the night to respond. He told trustees the district expects to rebuild under local city permits rather than seeking state permits, which he said should speed reconstruction. “We’re counting worst case scenario that it takes a year to get the building back up and going, but I really believe it’ll be sooner than that,” the superintendent said.
The superintendent also praised beyond-school services, saying Beyond the Bell had been designated the best after-school program in the 209 area code. He thanked staff who accommodated program relocations the night of the fire and noted recent facilities work: restroom renovations at one site are complete and asphalt sealing is underway.
On enrollment the superintendent said the district is down approximately 50 to 60 students districtwide compared with last year. He urged the community to encourage attendance and noted the district will continue outreach. The superintendent asked the public to use the chain of command to report problems and requested district staff keep trustees informed of needs.
He closed by noting that a district staff member, Nancy, was absent because her mother had passed away and asked trustees to keep her in their thoughts. The superintendent’s report was presented as an administrative update; no board action was taken on the items he reported.
