Former board member urges district to act on student lunch balances before debt grows

Former board member Keesha Sandich told the Cabarrus County Board of Education on Aug. 11 that parents and principals need a visible plan to prevent rising unpaid student lunch balances.
“I don't want us to get to May 2026, and we are tens of thousands of dollars in lunch debt,” Sandich said, urging board members to act and noting she had asked whether the board had been discussing launch balances at prior finance committee meetings.
Sandich said she watched the board’s prior meeting and did not see a public plan presented. She said staff were expected to bring a plan to the finance committee but, as a member of the public, she had seen no plan discussed.
She told the board that principals receive a weekly breakdown of their schools’ lunch debt and that those weekly updates create opportunities to craft solutions, and she encouraged the board to accept offers from community members who want to help address the problem.
Sandich also cited the county’s population when urging action, saying Cabarrus County has “over 200,000 residents” and that community resources exist that could be marshaled to address lunch debt.
Board members invited Sandich to the next Finance Committee meeting; no committee action was recorded in the meeting minutes.
