Board reviews proposed policy on locker, desk and vehicle searches (first reading)

The Warwick County School Board reviewed a proposed new policy, 4300, on Aug. 11 that would formalize rules for inspecting student lockers, desks and vehicles parked on school property. Doctor Walter Lambert summarized the proposal and said it largely codifies existing practices and clarifies that items forbidden by state law, board policy or administrative regulation may not be stored in student-assigned storage areas or vehicles. The proposed policy specifies categories of prohibited items: items forbidden by state law or policy (for example, alcohol when possession is illegal for the student), items deemed a health hazard to others, and items that "will cause or can reasonably be foreseen to cause an interference with school purposes or an education function." Lambert said the language is intended to reflect current safety practices and make them explicit in board policy. Why it matters: the policy sets formal expectations for building staff and clarifies the district's authority on searches on campus. Lambert later told the board that the state requires a search-related policy and that administrative and legal counsel helped adapt the model language for district use. Board members asked about notification for vehicle searches on school property; Lambert said parents would be contacted in circumstances involving private vehicles and that such searches are not routine, emphasizing they are used only when safety concerns arise. The policy had its first reading; a second reading is set for the Aug. 25 meeting.
