City honors youth baseball team for first trip to World Series

Mayor Smith recognized the Columbia youth baseball team Tuesday evening and invited Coach Richard Burns and team members to the dais for a ceremonial presentation and photo. The council praised the players, coaches and parents for their effort and community fundraising that supported the team’s travel.

The recognition highlighted local youth sports development and community involvement. Coach Richard Burns said players ‘‘put in the work’’ and noted the team’s experience competing outside the county. "This is the first team to ever get a chance to go to the World Series," Burns said. Mayor Smith told the players, "the city is behind you…Whatever you need, you have leaders...willing to step up for you."

Council members singled out assistant FA director Trebekio Robertson and coaches Lee and Colvin for helping rebuild the local baseball program and giving players exposure to competition beyond the county. Council members also praised parents and volunteers for fundraising and supporting travel to tournaments.

The presentation included a pledge from a council member to try to secure tickets for players’ families to attend the games and a short photo opportunity on stage. The recognition was ceremonial; no formal council motion or budget action was recorded in connection with the honor.

Local officials framed the recognition as part of broader efforts to revive youth baseball over the past three to four years and to expand extracurricular opportunities for children. City leaders encouraged continued community support for coaches and fundraising efforts moving forward.
