The Board of Mayor and Aldermen discussed on Aug. 5 a proposed amendment to the city code that would change permissible fireworks discharge times for July 4 and Dec. 31. The police department recommended extending the current 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. window to allow residents to discharge fireworks at midnight on those holidays by changing the end time to either 12:30 a.m. or 1 a.m.
The proposed change is set out in first reading as Ordinance 2025-23 to amend Title 7, Chapter 6, Section 7-615 of the La Vergne Municipal Code. Supporters noted that midnight is a traditional celebration time on New Year's Eve; some board members said they supported extending hours for New Year's but not for July 4, citing later hours on July 4 may disrupt neighbors after a long day of events.
City staff explained the change would be limited to the two dates and that any formal motion would be made at the next scheduled meeting, where aldermen present could move and vote on specific language. No final vote on the ordinance was recorded in the workshop transcript.
The board directed that the item return for formal action at the next meeting; how the board frames the motion (12:30 a.m. vs. 1 a.m., both dates vs. only New Year's) will be resolved at that time.
