Council approves purchase of used ambulance for new municipal EMS service for $32,000

Town managers and fire/EMS officials told the council on Aug. 12 that the town had budgeted $100,000–$125,000 for a used ambulance while it transitions to a municipal EMS service. Chief Hamill and staff reported a local town offered a 2011 Ford ambulance in excellent condition and that the seller agreed to transfer it to South Berwick for $32,000. Chief Hamill and others said the vehicle has relatively low mileage for a used rig and includes a 1–2 year‑old powered stretcher and power loading system; officials said the included equipment materially improves the truck’s value and reduces near‑term equipment spending. The council voted to purchase the ambulance and to accept the donation/transfer arrangement; the motion passed unanimously. Staff said the vehicle will be integrated into service when it is delivered and will allow the town to begin operations while it pursues a new new‑build vehicle over a longer schedule.
