Jackson County supervisors received an update Tuesday that heavy, recent rains have caused edge rutting on many nonreclaimed secondary roads and that the county's multi-year reclaiming program is about 60–65% complete.
County road staff said the heavy rainfall has kept water channelized along some road crowns, producing rutting especially on nonreclaimed roads where curb (edge) material remains and cannot easily drain to the ditch. Staff said it is preferable to retain edge material until reclaiming can raise the road crown, but the recent storms have increased failures on exposed sections.
Officials discussed interim measures to reduce rutting on roads not scheduled for immediate reclaiming, including cutting intermediate notches at points along long grades to provide relief paths for water and strategically placing rock at lower outlets. Supervisors and staff agreed some roads scheduled for earlier phases should be prioritized this year, weather permitting. One supervisor said several roads originally planned for year one will be moved up to address urgent conditions.
County staff said there will be no reclaiming activity during the current wet week, and a safety meeting with partner crews limited field operations. Staff emphasized that roads already reclaimed show markedly improved drivability, but freshly reclaimed sections may still be squishy after recent storms.
No formal action was taken; supervisors directed staff to continue prioritizing urgent segments and to evaluate intermediate drainage cuts where feasible.
