The Mission Economic Development Corporation told the council Monday it is accepting applications for a downtown assistance program and shared bridge crossing trends and recent local business wins. Nut graf: Tecla Garcia, CEO of the Mission EDC, said the downtown assistance program provides financial aid to businesses in and near Conway between the expressway and 18th Street and that applications are open until Sept. 2. EDC staff also summarized bridge crossing counts, reported a large tenant lease in the EDC's building and showed short videos featuring two Ruby Red small‑business winners. Garcia said the downtown assistance program remains open and that EDC staff will do door‑to‑door outreach next week to make sure eligible businesses know about the Sept. 2 deadline. She noted one business tenant, Juniors Supermarket, has leased a larger office in the EDC's building for administrative needs as it expands west. The EDC also summarized vehicle and truck crossing data for local border bridges, noting fiscal‑year 2024 passenger vehicle crossings totaled about 3,200,000 and that while FY25 numbers dipped from FY24, crossings remain above FY23 levels. Garcia said truck traffic was affected earlier in the fiscal year by tariff uncertainty but shows signs of recovery. As part of the presentation the EDC shared two short videos of Ruby Red competition winners: a young app developer building an education tool and Erica Lopez of The Board Box Cup, who described growing a charcuterie‑and‑grazing‑table business for local events. Garcia closed by thanking the council and noting the EDC continues coordinating donations from recruited businesses to local nonprofits such as the Boys & Girls Club and the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley.
