Superintendent says district is monitoring Tropical Storm Erin, highlights attendance gains and K-8 cell phone rule

Superintendent Dr. Prince told the School Board of St. Lucie County on Aug. 12 that district staff are monitoring Tropical Storm Erin and that he will send daily updates from the National Hurricane Center as the storm develops. "I googled it today. The height of the hurricane season is the August. We're in the August. Through through the October. So we've got, 2 months, and we're already monitoring tropical storm Erin that is projected to be our first hurricane," Dr. Prince said. He added he will be sending the board daily updates from the National Hurricane Center. Dr. Prince also highlighted an improvement in student attendance last year, telling the board, "We had a significant number of students that were attending. Almost a thousand students, were in attendance every day last year." He credited teachers and staff for outreach to families. On classroom policy, Dr. Prince told the board that "the law has changed for our, k through 8 students with regards to cell phones. And cell phones, need to be off and away," and urged families to follow the rule to limit distractions. He announced a Legacy High School ribbon-cutting at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, which will replace the usual workshop location, and encouraged families to use the district's bus app to track student transportation. The superintendent also noted the district earned its first "A" last year and thanked the board and communications team for branding work ahead of the new year.
