Board hears first read on budget amendment to allocate roughly $5.9 million in state teacher bonus pay

Jeff Taylor, a staff member, presented a first read of a budget amendment tied to state teacher bonus pay. "This is pretty simple. This is all in relation to teacher bonus pay," Taylor said, then reported the district "has received a little over $5,900,000.0 from the state of Tennessee for the teacher bonus pay that was approved by the state." Taylor told the board that the appropriation on the amendment would be applied to salary and benefits line items.
Taylor said the district had allocated somewhat more than the confirmed amount to allow for 3 or 4 awards currently under appeal at the state level. "We've appropriated money to include the appeals just in case they get overturned," he said. The first read did not include a formal vote; the amendment will return for further board action.
Board member Mister Garland asked whether teachers were satisfied with the state payment; Taylor responded, "I can't really answer that question. It's additional money, so I would hope they're pleased with it." Garland noted that additional money "doesn't mean that it's sufficient to cover all the expenses that they're gonna incur." No board motion or vote occurred during the presentation.
