Special education staff report trainings, certifications and vaccine clinic as school year begins

Special education staff said they conducted professional development, safety care and CPR certifications, hosted a vaccine clinic for seventh graders, and held a SPED PLC to review service logs and parent engagement at the start of the year.
Melanie Grundy, representing the district’s Special Education student services, reported multiple trainings and activities ahead of the school year. She said the SPED team presented at new teacher orientation on inclusion best practices and accommodations.
Grundy reported two recent Safety Care trainings that certified 57 staff members across roles including teachers, paraprofessionals, behavior aides and principals. The district also provided six CPR classes and certified 87 transportation team members, she said, and credited nurses Elizabeth Settlement and Nora Hale for coordinating those efforts.
Grundy said nurses also ran an evening vaccine clinic focused on seventh graders who had not yet received the Tdap mandatory vaccine and that the district’s first SPED Professional Learning Community meeting covered documentation practices, service logs, offers of FAPE and parent engagement.
The presenter said technical difficulties occurred during the PLC but that core topics — service documentation and building parent relationships — were addressed. Board members commended the effort to increase parent engagement and staff readiness for the year.
