Somers board adopts districtwide safety plan; chief emergency officer to file with state

The Somers Central School District Board of Education voted to adopt an updated districtwide safety plan Tuesday and directed the district’s chief emergency officer to file the plan with the New York State Education Department commissioner and provide copies to local law enforcement and the state police within 30 days, the board’s motion stated.

The adoption follows a public hearing opened at the board’s previous meeting and a 30-day public comment period during which the plan was posted on the district website, Board trustee Amanda said. Amanda read the resolution that cited Commissioner’s Regulations 155.17, which requires a districtwide safety team to develop and maintain the plan.

Why it matters: The districtwide safety plan outlines emergency preparedness and response procedures for schools and is subject to state filing and local law-enforcement coordination requirements.

What the board did: During the meeting the motion to adopt the plan was moved and seconded and approved by voice vote. The resolution also directed the chief emergency officer to file the plan with the commissioner of education within 30 days of adoption and to provide a copy to appropriate local law enforcement agencies and the state police.

Board comments and context: Superintendent Adam thanked Dan Corrado, the district safety coordinator, and the safety team for updates to the plan. Amanda said the plan had been available on the district website for the past month and that she was not aware of any public comment submitted during the comment period.

Next steps: District staff will complete the required filings and coordinate with local law enforcement as directed by the resolution.
