Board approves revisions to District of Innovation plan to comply with new state discipline provisions

Mr. Monica presented recommended updates to the district—s District of Innovation (DOI) plan and asked the board to approve changes driven by recent state legislation. "There are really only 2 components of our current plan that deal with that," Monica said, summarizing how House Bill 6 affected DOI provisions around discipline and armed security.
Monica explained one required change: state law now requires a designated campus behavior coordinator — typically the campus principal — so the district must remove a DOI provision that previously allowed broader designation of behavior coordinators. He said a second DOI provision that allowed flexibility around armed security coverage at campuses would also be removed because the district now employs its own police force and stationing officers is a local police decision.
Monica also warned trustees that House Bill 2 will eventually phase out DOI exceptions for certification in many subject areas: the district has used DOI provisions in the past to employ experienced candidates pending certification, but Monica said the law will narrow those allowances over the next one to two years and the district is working toward fully certified staff in core subjects.
Trustees voted unanimously to approve the DOI plan revisions at the meeting.
