Lake Dallas SHAC reports on sex-ed, nutrition and membership as board considers appointments

John Modica presented the Student Health Advisory Council annual report and asked the Lake Dallas ISD Board of Trustees to approve five SHAC members the board had been asked to appoint. "SHAC does many things. This is our Student Health Advisory Council," Modica said, describing the council—s role in setting hours for health instruction and advising on parent and student programs.

The SHAC, which state law requires the board to appoint at least five members to, recommended five current members for reappointment; the presentation identified Craig Richter as chair and Andrew Clements as co-chair and named Lisa Walraven as the district—s health services coordinator. The council reported it met four times during the year, per state requirements, and reviewed several programs and assessments.

Among programs discussed were presentations from the North Texas Child Advocacy Center (an opt-in program for students), the Procter & Gamble sexuality program for fifth graders, the district—s continuing partnership with the Boys & Girls Club, and the child nutrition department—s triennial assessment and wellness plan. Modica said SHAC also held a tabletop discussion in May on student cell-phone use, screen time and conflict-resolution programming; he noted that a state law affecting cell phones was passed over the summer and that SHAC—s discussion was timely.

Modica told the board the campuses are collecting course syllabi and other instructional-plan artifacts to make it easier for parents to request and review instructional materials when needed. He closed by saying the full report appears in the board packet and invited questions; none were raised before the board moved on to other business.
