Sussex County Council approves multiple community grants for local nonprofits

Sussex County Council approved a series of county grant awards to local nonprofits during the Aug. 12 meeting, allocating funds for operational expenses, events and youth programming.
Council approved the following grant awards (as moved and recorded at the meeting): Community Resource Center — $2,500 for Safe Harbor homeless day shelter operations; Cape Henlopen Senior Center (Rehoboth concert band fundraiser) — $1,500; Speak Out Against Hate — $500 for youth education programs; Sussex Land Foundation (Dogfish Dash) — $3,000; Unique Minds Changing Lives — $500 for a summer healthy‑eating food pantry; Autism Delaware — $2,000 for the Snowflake Soirée fundraising event; Friends of Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge — $1,000 for Junior Ranger Trail and Purple Martin programs; Delaware Law Enforcement Thank You Ride Association — $2,000 for the annual thank‑you ride; and Developing Artist Collaboration — $500 for final renovation work at the Westside Creative Market.
Individual council members identified district account contributions during the motions; many awards were funded by a combination of district allocations. Motions for the grants were made by council members, seconded, and each vote was recorded in favor during the meeting.
Assistant county staff placed the applications on the Aug. 12 agenda and noted application deadlines and prior grants where applicable. The human services grant program application process for FY26 was also announced earlier in the meeting with a submission deadline of Sept. 30, 2025; individual grant awards described above were made from council discretionary accounts at the meeting rather than through the FY26 competitive process.
Council did not create new ongoing contracts or recurring obligations with these awards; they are one‑time grants as reflected in the motions recorded on Aug. 12.
