Recreation department reports strong summer programming, scholarship awards and summer‑nights planning

Recreation staff told the commission that the season has been busy and largely successful: a track accessibility project is complete and the department recovered the remaining grant funds for that work; the fall brochure went live and fall registration will open on the 15th; and staff will present a full participation and budget recap in the commission’s next meeting.
Staff highlighted summer camp operations and a counselor response to an incident. Staff said camps ran successfully and that one site supervisor administered the Heimlich maneuver to a camper; the supervisor, Erin Nevaroli, was honored at a Select Board meeting for her actions. Commissioners also reported distributing about $9,000 in summer-program scholarships after working with Youth and Family Services to vet applicants.
On events, staff said the Fall brochure posted today, summer nights are two weeks away, and departments (police, fire, DPW) had met to coordinate public safety. Commissioners discussed partnering with the Rotary Club and Saint Mark's to add food trucks and bands and suggested surveying residents about preferred days and times for concerts to improve turnout. The commission also noted a successful block party turnout and discussed parking concerns at Finn for weekends when multiple sports overlap.
Pickleball users were active on courts; staff and commission members agreed to install signage near the school gate instructing players to go around during school hours so school playground access is not blocked. Staff also said they would repost event photos to community social channels when appropriate.
Next steps: staff will provide a September recap with participation numbers and budgets, coordinate with Rotary and Saint Mark's on event partnerships, pursue signage for pickleball access around school hours, and continue scholarship coordination with Youth and Family Services.
