Superintendent highlights McKinley Academy transition, community coffees and new 'culture of excellence' initiative

The district superintendent opened the meeting by recognizing volunteer leaders of McKinley Academy after the district assumed oversight of the charter program. Principal Stephanie Banch and McKinley board president Meredith Sawyer joined the board for a recognition and photo to mark the transition.
"On behalf of the board and the school district, thank you for your service and the countless hours that you put in volunteering," the superintendent told McKinley volunteers. Board members thanked the McKinley board for focusing on students who learn differently and for helping ensure continuity under the district's governance.
The superintendent also outlined a new "culture of excellence" initiative, saying it is built on eight pillars and is intended to drive high expectations, continuous improvement and collective success districtwide. The superintendent said principals, coaches, custodial and maintenance staff and department chairs will be engaged in the rollout.
Other items noted in the report: the district will host a monthly community coffee series beginning Aug. 22 at Harmony Cafe to engage citizens; the district held a groundbreaking for a baseball-field renovation on July 30, and the district received a large donation for the project; and the superintendent is participating in a first-year superintendents' program consisting of recorded workshops and virtual sessions.
No formal action was taken; the remarks were informational and included public thanks to volunteers, reminders about upcoming events and plans for internal professional development.
