Sheriff flags $31,000 Windows 11 upgrade as unexpected budget pressure for Gage County

Sheriff’s Office staff told the Gage County Board of Supervisors Wednesday that a quote to make county office computers Windows 11-compatible is roughly $31,000 and was not included in the current budget submission.
The sheriff said three ordered vehicles and outfitting delays were also complicating the department’s budget outlook for the coming fiscal year. Staff described the $31,000 figure as a vendor estimate covering upgrades for machines that cannot otherwise support the newer operating system; the county has not finalized which work will require hardware replacement vs. software updates.
Supervisors suggested coordinating with the clerk’s office and contracting vendor Applied Connective Technologies to schedule upgrades on a cycle to spread cost across budget years instead of a mass replacement. The sheriff said the quote and equipment evaluation are attached to the budget submission and staff will return with a detailed plan during budget deliberations.
No formal budget action was taken at the meeting; supervisors asked staff to work on a replacement/update schedule and to provide cost details when the county begins formal budget hearings.
