Council approves no-parking zone outside school on Eighth Avenue

The Terre Haute City Council voted on Aug. 7 to create a no-parking zone on the north side of Eighth Avenue from Sixteenth Street to 230 feet east of Sixteenth Street to improve safety during school drop-off and pick-up. City staff said the school corporation requested the change to reduce queuing and hazardous conditions near the school. Marcus Myers, City Engineer, said the city has worked on similar measures at other schools and that removing parking on one side of narrow streets helps traffic flow and keeps children away from moving vehicles. Council moved to take action and then voted to adopt the ordinance; the council record shows the motion passed by voice vote.
