The Gage County Board of Equalization on May 28 voted unanimously to approve partial changes and corrections to the county property tax roll, citing a statutory authority referenced in the meeting record.
Alice Lauer, assessment coordinator at MIPS, told the board that several parcels had retained an old outbuilding classification because an automated process to remove the old classification did not run. "They had an outbuilding classification change, and the automated process to remove the old classification didn't run," Lauer said. The error was discovered after March 19, and staff sought board approval to correct the records so notices would be issued on the same schedule as other properties.
The board approved the corrections on a motion by Board member Adams, seconded by Board member Dorn. The clerk called the vote and recorded "5 in favor; motion carries." The approved action was described in the meeting as an "administrative change."
Why it matters: The corrections change parcel classifications on the tax roll and affect which properties receive reassessment notices and when those notices are mailed. Correcting classifications helps ensure affected property owners receive consistent notice and that records align with the assessor's schedule.
Additional assessor-office items: During the meeting staff said reassessment notices were scheduled to go out on Friday and that reassessment work was complete except for Beatrice. Board discussion mentioned estimates and bids for the Beatrice reassessment, and staff said they intend to include related costs in next year’s budget and will brief the board further when ready.
Next steps: With the board’s approval, staff will update the tax roll records and proceed with issuing notices according to the assessor's timeline.
