Dona Ana County staff on Aug. 12 introduced a new digital newsletter named the Dona Ana Dash and told the commission the county will create a Spanish-language public information officer position to produce original Spanish-language content.
Amanda Gomez, department manager for digital communications, showed the board designs and distribution plans for the new Dona Ana Dash, a digital newsletter intended to consolidate department reports, celebrate staff, and promote county services and events. Multimedia coordinator Joseph Vargas previewed a mascot, "Dash," a road-runner branded for the newsletter and county communications.
Commissioners asked about Spanish-language outreach. Steven Lopez, assistant county manager, said County Manager Scott Andrews had authorized transferring a vacant detention-center position to create a Spanish-language public information officer. Lopez said the county wants original Spanish content rather than machine translation of English posts and that the county will expand Spanish-language posts on social platforms and subtitles for videos where feasible.
Staff said they will build a distribution list, provide sign-up options on the county website, and add the Dash content to the county's communications channels. The board and staff said additional Spanish outreach on social media and WhatsApp would be prioritized to reach non-English-speaking residents.
