Parole denied for Galen Dickerson; board cites need for additional programming

The Louisiana Committee on Parole denied Galen Dickerson’s parole request on Aug. 6, 2025, saying he needs additional programming despite steady institutional work and trustee status. Dickerson described his offense history as an armed robbery conviction and told the board he had taken classes, worked in the cafeteria and remained out of trouble in recent years. Institutional testimony noted he arrived at Louisiana State Penitentiary in February 2004, had completed courses including anger management and was currently enrolled in a prerelease program; the institution also recorded 47 disciplinary reports since incarceration. A victim’s relative who had been assaulted in an earlier case spoke in opposition and described the continuing trauma inflicted on elderly victims. The district attorney’s office and local victim representatives urged denial based on prior violent offenses and the risk posed to vulnerable victims. Board members agreed Dickerson needs more substance-abuse programming and further evidence of remorse; the panel denied parole at 12:25 p.m. Aug. 6, 2025.
