Commission approves visible window replacements at 15 Garfield Street with exterior finish conditions

The Springfield Historic Commission approved replacement work for windows at 15 Garfield Street on Aug. 7, 2025, authorizing replacement of two of three windows that are visible from the public way while requiring the applicant to complete exterior trim and finish work to read as historic from the street.

The applicant described prior renovations and said a bathroom window had already been replaced for immediate weatherproofing; she told commissioners some windows were original and others were preexisting. Commissioners examined photos and asked that any exposed storm‑window chassis or unfinished trim be completed so the street elevation retains a historically appropriate appearance.

Commissioners discussed sightlines, sash proportions and finish color; staff advised that if exterior woodwork is altered it should be returned to a historically appropriate profile and color. The motion passed (recorded votes: Commissioner Paul K., yes; Commissioner Walsh, yes; Commissioner Escobar, yes). The commission said the applicant should return with details or samples if the contractor cannot recreate the original trim or profiles and that repair of the exterior woodwork may require a subsequent submittal.
