Council authorizes $40,000 to expand concrete-leveling pilot for sidewalks

Staff explained the technique — lifting and stabilizing settled or uneven sidewalk slabs rather than removing and replacing them — and presented it as a cost-effective option in many instances. Staff said they had used four vendors in the prior year’s pilot and that, where applicable, leveling can cost roughly half of a typical remove-and-replace repair and cause less disturbance to landscaping and irrigation.
Engineering staff noted the technique is not suitable for every defect (for example, slabs with extensive cracking or sections that must settle downward). The ordinance authorizes city-approved concrete-leveling vendors to perform work as directed by the engineering department and funds were made available through an appropriation referenced in the packet.
