City staff presented a request on Aug. 12 to replace the roof at the Independence Preschool building at 7121 Valley View Drive and asked council to authorize spending to complete the work before the school year begins.
Staff said the roof received a temporary repair last year costing about $2,000 after storm damage; the insurance settlement for the incident was described as roughly $26,000. Staff reported they had since obtained three quotes and wanted to proceed quickly because the building will be used by the preschool under a renewed lease.
Council members asked for more documentation, including the original insurance estimate and a written breakdown of the quotes. The council agreed to keep the ordinance on first reading and to circulate the estimate and the three quotes to council members before a special meeting or workshop. Staff indicated contractors could begin work within two weeks if the council approved, and staff asked for an expedited review to preserve possible insurance replacement-cost eligibility.
No final appropriation or emergency funding was adopted during the Aug. 12 meeting; the item remains on first reading pending the additional documentation requested by council.
