BROCKTON, Mass. — On Aug. 7 the ordinance committee voted to table an ordinance that would add the director of social services position to the city’s pay plan and place the role under the newly created Department of Health and Human Services.
Chief Financial Officer Dr. Troy Clarkson told the committee the role has existed in the mayor’s office under previous mayors and is "an important position dealing with a lot of important social, economic, quality of life issues in the city." The ordinance would codify the position under the Department of Health and Human Services so the director would be an ordinance employee reporting through that department.
Councilor Powell and others said they remain uncomfortable approving a permanent position while collective bargaining is ongoing and without a job description; Powell also said a new mayor will take office in January and the incoming administration should have input on the scope of social services staffing. A motion to table the ordinance passed.
