Staff reported that other clinical bodies — including the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American College of Physicians (ACP), the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), and CIDRAP (Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy) — were preparing or expected to publish clarifying statements soon.
Public health staff said they were receiving community questions and saw scheduling uncertainty for local vaccine clinics: "a lot of people are turning anti-vaxx or they're really skeptical because we don't have clear messaging," a staff member told the board. The board agreed to issue a concise, plain-language interim statement that reinforces the value of vaccination and to follow that with a more detailed guidance piece and FAQs after the anticipated national/clinical guidance emerges.
Steven (board member) agreed to review relevant clinical websites and suggested staff prepare a draft statement for board review early next week; staff proposed public release of an interim statement around Aug. 15, followed by a more detailed update by early September. The board also asked staff to plan a short virtual meeting to adopt any formal policy position in a public session if needed.
Budgetary concerns were raised: staff noted the local immunization revolving fund (roughly $300,000) and the cost risk if the town orders COVID vaccine doses that go unused; staff said they bill insurance where possible but could absorb costs for uninsured patients. The board did not make a purchasing decision at the meeting; its action was limited to directing staff to prepare messaging and convene as needed.
