Several residents used the town's public comment period on Aug. 5 to press the council to enforce existing rules on occupied recreational vehicles, unpermitted rental apartments and commercial storage on single‑family agricultural lots.
Robert Austin, a resident of Hyde Park, said full‑time occupied RVs and tiny houses have proliferated and described ads on social media offering year‑round RV spots in town. “No other town allows single family agricultural lots to also have any full time occupied RV lots on the property,” Austin said. He told the council the trend has led to safety and nuisance complaints and said the town has not sufficiently enforced existing codes.
Other speakers raised related concerns about illegal apartments being advertised online and people using residential lots for commercial vehicle and equipment storage. Residents urged the council to pursue permitting changes and stronger code enforcement to preserve the town's rural character.
Separately, Mary McNicholas, a government relations representative, briefed the council on a North Lake road closure and construction operations and thanked public works and public safety for their coordination; she said crews were working to meet an anticipated reopening date around Aug. 10.
Why it matters: complaints about occupied RVs, unpermitted apartments and commercial uses on residential lots touch on zoning, code enforcement and public safety, and they were raised by multiple residents during the meeting's public‑comment hour.
