Health and Human Services to accept state funds for Group B water systems and solid-waste response

Gina James, director of Health and Human Services, briefed the commissioners on two contract items to be on the agenda: an amendment to the Department of Health contract to add funding for Group B water-system technical assistance (about $20,000) and a two-year Department of Ecology award to support environmental healths response to solid-waste complaints (about $187,000).
"That funding supports our work with group b systems for writing technical assistance," James said of the Department of Health amendment. She explained the funding supports review of annual applications and sampling for small, nontransient water systems.
On the Ecology award, James said the funding "supports our work in responding to solid waste complaints in the community," and described the award as a two-year contract that helps staff respond when accumulations of garbage or leaking vehicles create public-health concerns. She confirmed the Ecology award functions as a reimbursement contract.
Commissioners asked for follow-up on local complaints tied to wells and illegal dumping near city boundaries; James said permitting includes water-availability review for developments and that jurisdictional coordination is needed for solid-waste removal when property boundaries are unclear.
Both items will appear on the board agenda so the county can accept the funding and proceed with work in environmental health and water-system assistance.
