Health department to accept state funds for Group B water system assistance and Ecology solid-waste work

Cowlitz County Health and Human Services staff told commissioners Monday they will amend a Department of Health contract to allocate about $20,000 for Group B water-system technical assistance and accept a two‑year Department of Ecology award of roughly $187,000 to support solid-waste complaint response. "The amendment is adding funding for Group B water systems, right about $20,000," said Gina James, Health and Human Services. She described the funding as supporting technical assistance, annual application reviews, and some water testing for Group B systems. On solid-waste response, James said the Ecology award supports environmental-health staff responding to complaints—such as leaking vehicles or piled yard waste—that could create public-health hazards. The Ecology award was described as reimbursement-based. Commissioners and staff discussed constituent inquiries about a reported pile of solid waste near Catlin Elementary and how jurisdictional responsibility (city, county, railroad or state) determines response. Health staff said they would research which jurisdiction holds responsibility and coordinate response with the appropriate agency.
