Dalton to bid 2025 street-resurfacing project; trustees hear flood and pothole concerns

Village engineers and trustees told residents Aug. 4 that Dalton's 2025 Street Resurfacing project will address about 1.9 miles across 12 streets using Rebuild Illinois funding; the bid opening is scheduled for Aug. 12.

Engineer (Bergman) said the project includes 12 named streets and that the village will also seek Cook County hazard- or flood-recovery funding to address residential flooding issues raised by residents.

Several residents, including Wayne Washington and resident Missus Cook, urged the board to address persistent flooding on Berg Drive and severe potholes on Burnt Drive and other streets. Washington said standing water has repeatedly damaged pavement and created deep potholes; Missus Cook and others asked the village to take stronger enforcement action against abandoned properties and overgrown vacant lots.

Mayor and staff said the village is conducting an overall infrastructure assessment and identified approximately $868,000 in Rebuild Illinois funding to resurface a list of streets. The mayor read the specific streets slated for the resurfacing project and said bids will open Aug. 12. Trustees said the resurfacing money will be focused on the worst segments first and that staff will publish a block-level priority list.

Board members and public-works trustees also discussed routine pothole repair and tree-branch pickup schedules; Public Works said residents should cut branches into 4-foot sections for curbside pickup and use department contact numbers for service requests.

No contract was awarded at the meeting; the board expects the bid opening and will return for contract award after bid evaluation.
