Cheltenham committee hears progress report on Sheldon High roof and stadium projects

Cheltenham School District facilities committee members on Monday received updates on two summer construction projects at Sheldon High School: a partial roof replacement and a multi-phase stadium renovation.
The updates were delivered by a facilities staff member, who said the roof project — funded largely through a state school improvement grant — is on schedule and expected to finish before students return to school. “We are right on schedule,” the staff member said.
The roof work covers roughly 75% of project costs through a state grant, with a total project cost of about $1,500,000, the staff member said. The project began in mid-June and was scheduled to finish in mid-August; demolition work began the week of Aug. 18 and the anticipated completion date is Aug. 22. Remaining tasks include sheet-metal fabrication for roof elements and masonry and waterproofing repairs at rooftop brickwork. Once finished, the district will submit the final payment and seek reimbursement from the state grant program, the staff member said.
Committee members then heard a longer update on the stadium renovation. The staff member described ongoing excavation inside the track oval, saying the work will require “over 700 truckloads of dirt” to be hauled off and replaced with stone. Work will proceed on the bleacher foundations and the new concrete pads, while the field house and gatehouse foundations are built. The staff member said the stadium could appear substantially complete — field, track and bleachers in place — even while exterior fence work and other items remain unfinished, preventing public access until the interior and outside-of-oval work is finished.
The staff member also said the project team plans to relocate soils to a corner of the Sheldon High site to shorten truck travel and lower costs. “We think we can expedite the project by not having to ship materials far off-site,” the staff member said, adding that the approach should avoid impacting nearby soccer and baseball fields and could reduce costs enough to rebuild and restore existing structures for next year’s track season. The committee was told an ADA access ramp into the stadium is on the near-term work list and that the gatehouse is expected to be completed in winter.
The district is still tracking a broader fall completion window for the stadium work and staff said they will circulate a detailed Gantt chart to board members for the timeline and more granular milestones. The staff member specifically asked Mrs. Swiger to distribute the chart to committee members.
The roof and stadium updates were presented for information; no formal decisions on those projects were taken at the meeting. The only formal action recorded by the committee was approval of the minutes from the June facilities committee meeting. Charles Burnell Williams, a committee member, called for the motion; the committee voted unanimously by voice vote to approve the minutes.
Committee members asked for the Gantt chart and additional schedule detail; the staff member said they would provide those materials to the committee. No bids, contract awards or budget amendments were made at the meeting.
