County approves $3,650 sale of roughly 730 park boulders to landscaping contractor

The McLeod County Board approved a bid from Landscapings of Hutchinson to purchase about 730 rocks and boulders from county parks for $3,650.
Public Works staff said removing or repurposing the rocks was recommended in the parks plan because although the rocks have been used to border park property and deter vehicles, they increase maintenance from mowing and trimming. The rocks to be sold are located at Swan Lake Park, Buffalo Creek Park, Peetenberg Park and Dankering Park; remaining rocks will be reused for landscaping by the county.
Staff reported the request for bids was sent to six contractors and only one bid was received. A commissioner said they were not personally a fan of removing the rocks but moved to approve the sale; the motion carried by voice vote.
The board did not discuss reuse plans for the rocks retained by the county beyond saying they will be used for landscaping.
