The Wisconsin Rapids School Board approved transferring approximately 0.5 acres at 1801 16th Street South—land that includes an existing Water & Lighting Commission substation—to the Wisconsin Rapids Water and Lighting Commission (WWLC). The utility plans to expand the substation footprint and said it expects to invest about $3 million over the next three years if the transfer is completed.
Board and district staff said the current WWLC substation sits on district property and that the transfer would be surveyed and recorded at the utility’s expense. Superintendent Ron Rasmussen and district staff described an existing partnership with WWLC, including previous donated labor and material for athletic projects. The district’s presentation noted WWLC has been a longstanding partner that provided support on field lighting and related infrastructure.
Board members voted yes on the transfer; no purchase price was required and the utility will cover surveying and related transfer costs. The board directed staff to coordinate the legal transfer and to ensure the new parcel layout would not interfere with future district uses of adjacent property.
The transfer was approved by roll call and staff will return documentation of the transfer and any site plans to the board as the project proceeds.
