The Village of Hinsdale approved an intergovernmental agreement under a DuPage County member‑initiative grant to share a licensed social worker with Burr Ridge, Darien and Willowbrook. The board authorized expenditure of $45,000, funded by the DuPage County grant, to support the shared social-worker project. Village staff said the program’s aim is targeted, high-impact community services; the grant will fund participation and the village faces no budget impact for the current grant period. Staff said the program has been successful and the village is pursuing other funding sources to continue the service beyond the grant term. Police staff clarified the social worker is a contracted, nonprofit-employed position and not a sworn officer or a co-responder: the social worker does not routinely respond in police vehicles to emergency scenes. Instead, police make assessments on-scene and, where appropriate, arrange for the social worker to meet individuals for follow-up, stabilization and long-term referral services. The social worker maintains office hours at the Hinsdale Police Department but can meet clients in the community if needed. The four communities divide the service; trustees said the grant reduces Hinsdale’s net cost relative to funding the service alone. Trustees approved the IGA by roll call vote. Staff will monitor utilization and pursue other funding options to extend the program if possible.
